Be Vacation Ready! Prep Your House with this Advice from Paul Davis!

June 21 is the official start of summer, which means most of you will be packing up the swimmies, surf boards and beach umbrellas to prep for vacation. While you’re busy laying out the perfect attire, remember to prepare your property for vacation too. There are several key security and property measures to take prior to leaving for your favorite destination.

Be Safe, Not Sorry:

  • Make your house look like someone is home to avoid break-ins, like stopping the newspaper or asking a friend to pick up your mail.
  • Check all locks on doors and windows and set the security system.
  • Leave on a lamp while turning off all others.
  • Alert your credit card company that you will be out of town.
  • Leave emergency contact information with a friend.

Property Preparedness for Vacay:

  • Unplug small appliances and electrical devices.
  • Turn off water valves to the sink and appliances, such as the dishwasher and washing machine.
  • Set the water heater to “vacation mode” so that it doesn’t run as much and saves money.
  • Place the thermostat to 85 degrees, but no hotter to shield your furniture, plants and pets.
  • Run your kitchen sink disposal with vinegar or lemon to remove foul scents.
  • Take out the trash and get rid of perishable food.

Hopefully these simple tips will assist you in feeling at ease about leaving your property and allow you to completely enjoy this year’s vacation.
